“Move With Me” at the University of Washington

In October, the University of Washington saxophone quartet gave a lively performance of Move With Me (movements 1 and 2), my piece for saxophone quartet.

The piece is a three-movement, 13-minute tour through extroversion, introversion, and their co-existence, told through sometimes-fluid, sometimes-stilted song and dance. Movement 1 sparkles with an oft-over-the-top minimalist energy while movement 2 (the heart of the matter for me) stops and starts contemplatively before achieving an emotional outpouring. Movement 3 finally grooves with the energy and gravitas of both.

I’m especially fond of the fired-from-a-cannon energy the UW Quartet brings to the first movement and all the patience they bring to the second movement’s phrases and silences—enough to let the music breathe and create the spacious atmosphere that is a 180-degree contrast to the first movement, a sign of mature artistry.

Congratulations to the members of the quartet Kyle Grant (soprano), Kairui Cheng (alto) Curtis Chung (tenor), and Katie Zundel (baritone) for an energetic and thoughtful performance of Move With Me!
